Westport Goes Purple For Alzheimer’s Awareness

alzheimers-184x300Westport First Selectman Jim Marpe will participate in two events Saturday, Feb. 28 dedicated to raising awareness for Alzheimer’s disease. Westport Goes Purple for Alzheimer’s will include lining trees on Main Street with purple ribbons to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s.

Marpe also will announce the upcoming concert, Beatles, Stones & The British Invasion – A Benefit Concert for Alzheimer’s, to be held Friday, March 13 at the Fairfield Theatre Company.

Following his address Saturday, Marpe will place a purple ribbon on a tree located outside of David’s Tea on Main Street at 2PM.

Rare Disease Day 2015 – February 28th

Rare Disease Day takes place on the last day of February each year.

RDDThe main objective of Rare Disease Day is to raise awareness among the general public and decision-makers about rare diseases and their impact on patients’ lives.

An international, awareness-raising event, each year Rare Disease Day has enjoyed an ever growing number of participating countries with over a thousand patient organisations setting up events.

FTD Caregiver Support Group – Farmington, CT – Sunday, February 22nd

FTD Caregiver Support Group – Farmington, CT – about an hour from the Norwalk area – Sunday, February 22, 2015 (rescheduled from February 15th due to the weather)

The CT FTD Foundation has a support group meeting for all caregiver’s and families/friends who have a loved one diagnosed with Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD).

The support group meetings are a chance for everyone to share their experiences and express concerns. It also gives a chance to share ideas that have worked for other caregivers going through the same experience. Meetings are informal.  You are welcome to bring your loved one with FTD, Arden Courts will provide respite care in a separate room.  Please just let us know in advance if your loved one will attend.

Meetings are the third Sunday of every month at Arden Courts Memory Care, 45 South Rd, Farmington, CT. Time: 1:00pm – 2:30pm. Hosted by the CT FTD Foundation, meetings are free. For more information contact info@ctftdfoundation.org.

Note: There is still time to donate to the AFTD’s With Love Campaign 2015, a gift in honor of your loved one will help the AFTD in their mission to support caregivers, educate healthcare professionals, fund the research that will one day lead to a cure for FTD.

Caregiver Support Group Meeting – Norwalk Senior Center

The Caregiver Support Group at the Norwalk Senior Center is for caregivers of family members or friends diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or Dementia.

Date: February 12th, 10:30am to 11:30am

Location: Norwalk Senior Center, 11 Allen Road, Norwalk

The group offers caregivers an opportunity to share their experiences, help others by sharing their ideas, find out about resources and information that might be helpful. Meetings are friendly and informal. Occasionally there are themes and guest speakers.

Meetings are on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month. At the first meeting of the month, there are usually Dementia Care Specialists from Wilton Meadows who provide activities for loved ones while caregivers meet. Please call to confirm before bringing your loved one.

Hosted by Lynn Westfield, the group is free and open to all. Membership in the Senior Center is not required.
